ABOUT ME
A trained theatre maker, I studied the BA Acting at East 15 where I was taught to fully immerse myself in every character to find their truth. This, I believe, was the foundation for making me the writer I am today.
I have been working in the industry for over fifteen years and have been fortunate enough to have worked in many types of theatre in that time including touring, outdoor, T.I.E and the Edinburgh Fringe, to name a few.
My first play was a self-verbatim piece entitled Find Me. It was years in the making exploring female identity by sending voice notes over the course of a year and dissecting in in the room to devise a piece that felt spoke to many women of our age. It was workshopped with actors and later staged at The Vaults Waterloo.
This is where I caught the writing bug. I liked being at the start of the journey, to create characters and submerge myself in a new world. In 2020 I was accepted into the prestigious John Burgess Playwriting Group whilst pregnant with my son. He often came to class with me and became the group baby.
In 2021 I was commissioned by the Minack Theatre in Cornwall to write a site-specific play for their youth theatre. This was such a special experience for me. To be able to create something for such a beautiful setting and then workshop it with young minds. They helped shape the piece and I was very honoured to receive an email from John Brolly at the Minack to inform me one of the young members had written a sequel to the play.
Continued learning is a huge part of my practice, and to ensure I sensitively approach the topics I write about, I have completed Trauma-Informed Practice training and am a Mental Health First-Aider.
Testimonials
“Kate has created a piece of work with a strong musicality to each scene and moment, that is funny, nostalgic and moving. Kate has a really strong identity as a writer.”
Feedback from High Tide Theatre
“Kate has a magical capability to capture exactly what theatre-makers are envisioning. We could give her a vague concept and she’d know immediately what we were talking about.
Her outstanding ability to transfer that idea from our brains to the page is astonishing.”
